Eliot Porter's magnificent photographs convince the viewer to look more closely at the natural world and to appreciate its tremendous variety, complexity, delicacy and beauty. This publication, the first in-depth retrospective of Porter's work, reflects his intimate encounters with widely diverse ecosystems across the world and emphasizes the scientific and humanistic foundations of his art. Seen as a whole, Porter's work projects an eloquent call to respect and value nature and to take careful note of humanity's diverse interactions with it. That appreciation, his example suggests, helps us lead fuller lives in closer balance with the natural world around us.
Acerca del autor: A Harvard graduate in engineering and medicine, Porter's work is significant as both art and science. Born in 1901 in Illinois, he began to photograph birds and landscapes as a boy. Porter has been the recipient of numerous awards and a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1941. He has exhibited extensively, at the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum Of Art in New York, and the Smithsonian Institution, Washington DC. Eliot Porter died in 1990. The retrospective exhibition of his work opens at the Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth, Texas in 2001.
