Meredith Voss spends her career cataloguing the lives of the dead, but nothing in an estate liquidator's training prepares her for the locked room at the top of Marrow Hill Farm.
She was hired to clear out a dead widower's property before his son can rush it to sale, one more quiet job in a quiet county. Then she finds a box that does not belong to any inventory list, and behind a door that never appears on the county's floor plans, a private collection of ordinary things: a watch, a hairbrush, a photograph, a bracelet. Each one belonged to a woman who was never reported missing, because each one was the kind of woman nobody thought to look for.
The dead man cannot answer for what he did. His son can, and he wants the house sold and forgotten before anyone connects the family name to what Meredith found upstairs. But Meredith has her own reason to keep pulling this thread. Twenty two years ago, her younger sister walked out of their house and never came back, and no one ever filed a report for her either.
- Uncover a locked room that was never on any county floor plan
- Piece together three decades of women nobody thought to search for
- Race a dead man's son who will do anything to keep the house sold quietly
- Confront a retired deputy who buried the truth for a price
- Watch an unlikely partnership form between a grieving appraiser and the detective who never let the old case go
- Feel the walls close in as someone decides Meredith has learned too much
Told with the quiet dread of a small town keeping its own secrets and the emotional weight of a woman finally asking the question her family spent two decades avoiding, this is a mystery for readers who want their thrillers slow burning, character driven, and impossible to set down before the last page.
