Publisher's matching dark green cloth, with boards ornately decorated in blind, spines ruled, decorated, and lettered in gilt, and brown coated endpapers. Very good set, with light toning to spines, light wear to spine ends, corners gently worn to boards, some hinges cracked but holding, light crack at pp. 176 - 177 in P&P, small tear out of the lower corner of rear free endpaper of S&S, light spotting to some pages at front and rear of books, and "Kathleen Wills" ownership signature to front free endpaper versos. Overall, a wonderful and comprehensive set. Gilson D8-12, M130. In addition to Jane Austen's six completed novels, this set includes A Memoir of Jane Austen, written by her nephew James Edward Austen-Leigh, along with her posthumously published epistolary novella Lady Susan, her abandoned novel "The Watsons," and the cancelled 10th chapter from Persuasion. Austen is well-known for the social criticism she weaves into her novels, using irony and realism to highlight gender roles in marriage and society. On the enduring popularity of Austen's novels, author Eudora Welty wrote "they pertain not to the outside world but to the interior, to what goes on perpetually in the mind and heart.".
