Inspired by the "Panta Rhei" scientific decade (2013-2022) of the International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS), the book focuses on the interactions between hydrology and society. Authored by over 160 experts from six continents and various backgrounds in hydrology and water sustainability, the book is structured into five parts: an introduction to the complexity of human-water systems and management strategies for global water challenges, a bridge between hydrology and the environmental and social sciences through foundational concepts and methodologies, significant progress in understanding coupled human-water systems with topics such as floods, droughts, agriculture, transboundary and global human-water systems, and diverse worldwide case studies illustrating real-world dynamics and solutions for water security. The final section synthesizes key findings, making this book an essential resource for students, researchers, and practitioners focused on sustainable water management and the dynamics of human-water systems. This comprehensive volume brings the "Panta Rhei" research agenda to life by exploring the theoretical and methodological approaches to hydrological processes shaped by the relationship between the environment and humans.

Acerca de los autores: Professor TIian Fuqiang is a Professor in the Department of Hydraulic Engineering at Tsinghua University. He is also the Vice President of the IAHS and has dedicated his career to researching agricultural water resources and flood-drought management, achieving excellence in hydrological mechanisms, sustainable irrigation in arid areas, flood forecasting and warning, and transboundary river water resources. He serves as the Associate Editor for international journals in the field of hydrology, such as Hydrology and Earth System Sciences and Journal of Hydrology. Leading several major research programs funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the Ministry of Science and Technology's National Key Research and Development Program, Professor Tian has received numerous awards for his contributions. These accolades include the Da Yu Water Conservancy Science and Technology Award, the Ministry of Education Natural Science First Prize, and the First Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress. Actively involved in the committee’s work since 2002, Professor Tian currently chairs the committee’s Bioenergy Working Group and serves as Vice Chair of the Climate Change Working Group. He has been honored with the Outstanding Contribution Award for Water Conservation Technology Innovation. His recent election as Vice Chair is expected to further promote innovation in irrigation and drainage technology and management in China, enhancing its international influence.

Dr. Jing Wei is a postdoc student in the department of Hydraulic Engineering at Tsinghua University with several prestigious publications in the field of hydrology.

Dr. Melissa Haeffner is an Associate Professor in the department of Environmental Sciences and Management at Portland State University. Her ongoing research and teaching commitments investigate water insecurity and justice within municipal water systems and the links between multi-scale policies, infrastructural and environmental conditions.

Dr Heidi Kreibich is head of the working group "Flood risk and climate adaptation" at the German Research Centre for Geosciences GFZ. Heidi is particularly interested in understanding, modelling and mitigating flood and drought risk and in human-water interactions. She is President of the Natural Hazards Division of the European Geosciences Union (EGU) and Panta Rhei Chair of the International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS).
