"The City of Pleasure, a Fantasy on Modern Themes" by Arnold Bennett is a forgotten novel which is curious in a number of ways. It is a full-blown lark concerning a romance (of course!), a mysterious and powerful monied entrepreneur, an amusement park (the City of Pleasure" of the title, which entails much more than mere amusement rides. There are concert halls, theatres . and mystery; there are discussions about poisons and … is there a murder hidden about? It's a romp and very much in an Arnold Bennettian style. ********** Of interest for Tauchnitz collectors is the April 1926 Tauchnitz catalogue which is attached at the rear of the book. As one can see from the title page, Tauchnitz published the book in 1919; but from the catalog's inclusion, it is obvious that they kept copies stored in their warehouse to send out as orders arrived (or as demand warranted). The catalog, and the dated list on the rear of the book s cover, is basically what tells us this is a 1926 reissue, rather than a 1919 issue. ************ SERIES : Collection of British and American Authors (Vol. 4529).
