Sinopsis:

The industrial production of optically active materials is a topic amenable to orthogonal approaches: one may consider in a systematic way how the various methodologies have been or could be applied or, alternatively, attempt to draw lessons from the study of a series of case histories. The editors believe both have a place and are necessary is maximum benefit is to be derived. Case histories alone do not necessarily set the solution to a problem in context or give an appreciation of why other approaches did not afford an industrial and, by definition, an economically viable, answer. They may not indicate the breadth of available techniques. In this volume, the scene is broadly set by an extended opening chapter which systematically considers the options, relates these to a variety of important targets and illustrates how particular problems or areas of chemistry have been tackled. Following this, the main subdivisions of the book deal wiith 1) "classical", non-biological resolutions, 11" biological methods (both resolution and asymmetric synthesis), 111) non-biological asymmetric synthesis, 1v) immobilizationa nd membrane technologies. This more or less follows the historical evolution of practical methods for large scale production of optically pure materials. No attempt has been made to subdivide by product category: pharmaceuticals; animal health products; agrochemicals; electronics chemicals; pheronomes; flavours and fragrances. This is the least fruitful approach, and there are many cross-applications; for example fungicides, which may appear under pharmaceutical and agrochemical headings. Within the major subdivisions of biological methods and asymmetric synthesis there is provided a mixture of case histories, surveys of reaction types and surveys of methods applied to the obtention of particular structural entities. All of the contributors are closely associated with, or based in industry, and collectively they have many years experience in applying practical methods to the production of optically-active materials. Their contributions are illustrated by reference to many different commercially important products or product groups. However, to keep the volume to a reasonable length it was not feasible to include reference to every important product. Some, such as HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, are just starting to be made in significant quantities; in the next few years these will undoubtably enrich the range of examples on which a volume such as this could draw.
