Print on Demand. This book delves into the fascinating history of the Southern Pacific Railroad, one of the most influential railroad systems in the United States. The author traces the railroad's inception, exploring the pivotal role of Theodore Dehone Judah in promoting the transcontinental project. Through meticulous research, the book unveils the challenges and triumphs faced during the construction of the Central Pacific line, highlighting the instrumental efforts of Leland Stanford, Charles Crocker, Mark Hopkins, and Collis P. Huntington. The author analyzes the complex interplay between the railroad company, government entities, and local communities, shedding light on the intricate web of incentives, subsidies, and political maneuvers that shaped the railroad's development. The book also examines the profound impact the railroad had on the economic and social landscape of the Pacific Coast, transforming industries, stimulating trade, and connecting distant regions. Ultimately, this book offers a comprehensive and nuanced understanding of the Southern Pacific Railroad, its historical significance, and its lasting legacy on the transportation system of the United States. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. …

So far as the author knows there is no published study which discusses in detail the important business problems con netted with the history of the Southern Pacific Railroad lines. Most of the books which contain references to the Southern Pacific or to the Central Pacific limit themselves to a few chapters upon the romantic aspects of their construction The few works which treat of the later period confine themselves chiefly to particular episodes in Southern Pacific history, often with the deliberate attempt to discredit the railroad company. The truth is that most writers upon the Southern Pacific have relied upon the reports of the United States Pacific Railway Commission or on Bancroft's History of California, and very few have done original work from source material.
