Neuware - 'La Chanson De Roland', or the 'Song of Roland', is the most significant and oldest surviving masterpiece of the medieval French chanson de geste. This epic poem captures the heroic and tragic narrative of the Battle of Roncevaux Pass during the reign of Charlemagne. The story focuses on the noble Roland, Charlemagne's nephew and most trusted warrior, who leads the rearguard of the Frankish army. Faced with overwhelming Saracen forces due to the betrayal of his stepfather Ganelon, Roland must choose between calling for help or upholding his knightly honor in a final, desperate stand. The work serves as a foundational text of Western literature, exploring profound themes of feudal loyalty, religious zeal, and the ideals of chivalry. Through its rhythmic and powerful verses, 'La Chanson De Roland' dramatizes the clash of civilizations and the personal cost of martyrdom and duty. Edited with meticulous care by T. Atkinson Jenkins, this version offers insight into the linguistic evolution and historical context of the 11th-century epic. It remains an essential read for those interested in the origins of French national identity and the legendary cycles of the Middle Ages. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. This work was reproduced from the original artifact, and remains as true to the original work as possible. Therefore, you may see the original copyright references, library stamps (as most of these works have been housed in our most important libraries around the world), and other notations in the work. This work is in the public domain in the United States of America, and possibly other nations.
