I have selected the parable of the Prudent Householder as the basis for some useful and perhaps necessary lessons in the light of the principles and demands of Catholic Action. But first it will be better to Show some way by which we may come to a real knowledge of this subject. Because being some thing that touches our whole life, our conduct and our office, mere notional knowledge about it is useless - that sort of knowledge which runs it off out of one's life to embalmment in the airy region of theory and speculation in his mind alone; the sort, too, which leads to misapprehension, misgiving and ultimately to mischief when it comes to putting that knowl edge to account in one's ministry. Of the vital necessity of Catholic Action as it affects us we can have no doubt, for this is a constantly recurring aspect of it in all the official docu ments. One selection will suffice here - one of the many and not at all the most emphatic - taken from a letter of the late Pope Pius XI, to the Archbishop of Breslau, dated Novem ber 13, 1928.
