nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - Imagine it's a sleepy Friday at a London wharf when a giant cask from Rouen, France, rolls in. Everyone thinks it's just packed with heavy statues, but then things get weird-it starts leaking actual gold coins! As a result, the dockworkers go into a frenzy and the police rush in. But when they finally pry that lid off, they find a gruesome surprise tucked under the treasure that's definitely worse than a tax audit: the body of a young woman. Now, Inspector Burnley from Scotland Yard has to figure out who she is and trace that cask's journey back across the English Channel through a total labyrinth of lies. You're going to find this investigation fascinating because it's a total logic puzzle. Burnley doesn't rely on lucky guesses; instead, he obsessively tracks shipping logs and train schedules. Since Freeman Wills Crofts was a railway engineer, he built a narrative that's as precise as a Swiss watch. You'll meet a ton of suspects, from dockers to the victim's own husband, but they all have alibis that seem tighter than a new pair of shoes.Burnley's search for the truth takes him from London's gritty docks to some gorgeous but treacherous spots in northern France. On the other hand, he's facing a killer who is just as methodical and prepared as he is, which makes the whole thing a high-stakes game of intellectual cat-and-mouse. This book is basically the grandfather of the modern police procedural. It ditches those crazy 'flashes of genius' you see in other books and focuses on what Burnley calls 'pegging away'-just relentless, professional hard work.If you're the kind of person who loves a mystery that actually makes you think, you'll get totally sucked into this world. Every single detail counts, from the weight of a crate to the exact minute a train left the station. In addition, the atmosphere of post-World War I Europe feels incredibly real. As the web of lies finally starts to unravel, you'll follow Burnley's logic to a conclusion that's both a total shock and completely inevitable. Trust me, you won't want to put it down.…
