This new diagnostic and management manual for primary care givers addresses the challenge of commutative trauma disorders. It provides a comprehensive understanding of work-related chronic injuries--from task analysis on the factory floor to a consideration of biological and sociological factors that influence injury reporting. Focus is given to the most common occupational musculoskeletal disorders, eg. the back, neck, hand, and upper extremity. Shows how to determine whether the injury can be attributed to work, and whether pain is a result of physical injury or psychological and sociological influences. Provides new insights into the physiological and structural changes that occur in overused muscles and how the central nervous system adapts to chronic pain. Offers a rationale for believing that cumulative trauma can lead to physical injury, and how some workers can think they have been injured more severely than they have. Presents a detailed diagnostic methodology--diagnostic criteria and assessment methods for various anatomic regions. Covers everything from ergonomic approaches to changes in attitudes in the structure of work and in society. Incorporates new research findings from a wide range of disciplines including pathophysiology, anatomy, sociology, pain psychology, physical therapy, and nursing.
