Building with Nature is a proven, innovative approach to create water-related Nature-based Solutions for societal challenges, that harnesses the forces of nature to benefit the environment, economy and society.

EcoShape, a unique collaboration between scientists, engineers, builders, designers and not-for-profits, has in the past decade designed, realizedmonitored and researched multiple Building with Nature projects in Europe (especially in the Netherlands) and South East Asia. These projects demonstrate the capacity to build Nature-Based Solutions at scale to create safe and sustainable flood protection as well as ecologically rich and resilient environments that provide great places to live, work, and visit. These characteristics make Building with Nature the go-to method to adapt to and mitigate climate change.
 
In this book, EcoShape brings the authors into dialogue with experts and stakeholders to discuss methodologies and lessons learned about Building with Nature as well as potential barriers and enablers for implementation. It describes and illustrates key concepts, linking them to a range of landscape types and their underlying ecological, economic, and social systems. As such, the book is more than a manual; it captures the imaginative and inspirational potential of Building with Nature.

Building with Nature is een bewezen, innovatieve aanpak om watergerelateerde Nature-based Solutions te realiseren voor maatschappelijke problemen. Deze aanpak benut de krachten van de natuur en versterkt de kansen voor natuurontwikkeling, waardoor meerwaarde ontstaat voor omgeving,economie en maatschappij. EcoShape is een unieke samenwerking tussen wetenschappers, ingenieurs, bouwers, ontwerpers en NGO’s.

In het afgelopen decennium heeft EcoShape verschillende Building with Nature projecten in Europa (vooral in Nederland) en Zuid-Oost Azië ontworpen, gerealiseerd, gemonitord en onderzocht. Deze projecten laten zien dat het mogelijk is om Nature Based Solutions op grotere schaal te realiseren. Deze oplossingen bieden naast duurzame en veilige kustverdediging ook ecologisch rijke en veerkrachtige landschappen, waarin het prettig leven, werken en verblijven is. Deze eigenschappen maken Building with Nature dé methode voor klimaatadaptatie en -mitigatie.

In dit boek brengt EcoShape de auteurs in gesprek met experts en stakeholders om verschillende methodes en lessons learned over Building with Nature te bespreken. Ook mogelijke barrières die toepassing in de weg staan en oplossingen komen aan de orde. Het illustreert aan de hand van verschillende landschappen welke concepten mogelijk zijn en verbindt deze met de aanwezige ecologische, economische en sociale systemen.
