With the demanded representations of fox hunting, stag hunting and fowling, about angling resp. fishing, horse racing etc. New edition of this work which is rarely to be found complete Unpaginated. Approximately 11 ½ inches tall. Condition Report Externally Spine fair condition green leather, gilt titles, 5 raised gilt decorated bands, loss to the top of the spine, discoloured. Joints fair condition there is a crack at the top of the front joint, both rubbed and worn, holding well. Corners fair condition bumped and worn with loss. Boards good condition half green leather and marbled boards, blind tooled detail where the leather joins the marbled boards, general signs of wear for the age. Page edges good condition top edge slightly darkened, all tanned and foxed, first 2 pages standing proud but attached. See above and photos. Internally Hinges good condition small crack at the top of the front hinge, strained to the gutter at the end (2 pages in) all holding strongly. Paste downs good condition plain. End papers good condition plain, subsequent end papers tanned and foxed. Title good condition tanned and foxed with some offsetting. Pages good condition 72 plates (plate 17 and 17*) including the frontispiece, some plates with marginal tears not impacting the engraving, 1 plate (22) with a repaired tear which is impacting the engraved image, complete, tanned and foxed throughout. There is the Edward Orme imprint to the plates, the engravings are of a good quality and cover all aspects of field sports and sporting dogs. A title often broken for the plates. Designed and executed by the obedient and obliged servant S. Howitt. Published March 1st 1800. Contents; Title Page Etching, Table of Contents (2), Advertising Broadside, 71 Etched Plates plus an extra plate laid in at the beginning. With the rare 1798 Broadside bound in, text as follows; "The British Sportsman: Designed and Executed in Finished Etchings, By S. Howitt, No.9, Macclesfield Street, Soho: Where Sixty Drawings for the work may be seen. Comprising: [Sixty drawings Listed]. To which will be added by desire of several subscribers, Ten Designs, viz, Six of Hawking, and four of Fishing: Which will conclude the work." Broadside printed on grey blue paper stock and laid in after the Table of Contents. No copies traced of the Broadside. Editions: This First Edition was published in an oblong binding, with an etched title page, a list of plates and 71 etched plates with no descriptive text. These plates were delicately executed with a fine needle , and display Howitt's fine knowledge of The Hunt and its ebb and flow. Howitt executed these over a three-year period with the pates dated 1798-1800. On completion he etched the title page. The first edition was released in 1800 and then republished in 1812 and again in 1834, the plates reworked with the edition of borders and new titles where necessary. Nicely bound in new half calf over marble boards, in an oblong binding. Boards and spine in fine condition. The spine with six panels and five raised bands double ruled in gilt. With a black lettering piece in the second compartment from the top. Internally the plates all fine impressions with the etching work still fresh. Some water stains and minor foxing and stains but generally very good. A nice example of the hard to find complete First Edition. The volume measures 28.5 x 23.2 x 2.5 cm.
