Knowledge and Awareness Provides Hope - Breast Cancer is a compassionate and thoroughly researched guide written from the perspective of a caregiver who lived it firsthand. Lawrence A. Yaggi Jr. is a 96-year-old Navy veteran, retired electrical engineer and Chief Financial Officr who lost his first wife, Nancy, to breast cancer after 52 years of marriage. This book is the result of decades of reflection, research, and a determination that others facing this disease should have the knowledge he wishes he had possessed when it mattered most.

Written in plain, direct language, the book guides readers through every stage of the breast cancer journey: understanding the disease and its risk factors, recognizing symptoms, navigating diagnosis and staging, evaluating treatment options, managing recovery, and finding emotional and practical support. A comprehensive glossary of medical terms and a curated directory of support organizations and financial assistance programs make this book a lasting reference as well as a compassionate companion.

This is not a medical textbook. It is the work of a man who sat beside someone he loved while illness took her - and who believes, with every part of his 96-year-old heart, that knowledge provides hope.

Lawrence A. Yaggi Jr. is a Navy veteran of the Korean War, a retired electrical engineer, and a former Chief Financial Officer. His career began in research and development at Texas Instruments and later included managing the manufacture of electron microscopes at Perkin-Elmer and serving as financial officer at two semiconductor companies. Now 96, he writes from Roseburg, Oregon. He came to writing through loss. After his first wife, Nancy, died of breast cancer following 52 years of marriage, he began gathering the knowledge he wished he had possessed while caring for her. That work became a series of books on serious illness and caregiving, written in plain language for families rather than physicians, including a guide to Alzheimer's disease and a training manual for hospice volunteers. He volunteers with hospice himself. An engineer's habits show in the work: he distrusts sensational claims, goes to primary sources, and organizes what he finds so that a frightened family can find the answer they need at two in the morning.
