"Never fall in love with your best friend. A rule built to last, until the moment it shattered." She made one rule to protect her heart: keep the friendship sacred. It was supposed to be her sanctuary, a shield against the kind of heartbreak you can never replace. But rules-no matter how carefully constructed-rarely survive the weight of a lifetime. Back in high school, they were a world of two: late-night calls, shared secrets, and laughter that belonged only to them. They were inseparable until the day he spoke the words that changed everything. In a single heartbeat, silence replaced their history, and the line between "us" and "strangers" was drawn in the sand. Years have passed. They've built different lives and loved different people. but when fate forces them back into the same orbit, the gravity of the past is impossible to ignore. Old feelings resurface alongside guilt, temptation, and the dangerous pull toward a boundary that was never meant to be crossed. Because sometimes, the people we spend a lifetime running from... are the very ones we've been running toward all along. But what happens when the love you finally claim becomes the very thing that divides you forever?

I have always believed that some lines aren't meant to be crossed. They aren't just arbitrary markers drawn in the sand; they are boundaries. They are the high-voltage fences that keep our lives from short-circuiting. They are safety nets stretched across the abyss of what-ifs.

And my most sacred commandment? Never, under any circumstances, fall in love with your best friend.

I can't pinpoint the exact second that rule was etched into my soul. It wasn't a sudden epiphany; it was a slow accumulation of evidence. Maybe it started back in high school, watching two classmates sob in the sterile light of the hallway after a breakup. A month prior, they had been inseparable, sharing headphones and finishing each other's sentences. Now, they were strangers who couldn't even stand the sight of each other, walking on opposite sides of the corridor as if the other were a ghost.

Or maybe it was seeing my cousin lose her childhood confidant. They had twenty years of history-every scraped knee, every late-night secret, every family tragedy shared. They thought "giving it a try" was a brave step forward. It wasn't. It was a plunge into a canyon they couldn't climb out of. When it ended, she didn't just lose a boyfriend; she lost the only person who knew the shape of her childhood.

The lesson was loud, clear, and relentless: Love complicates everything.

I saw the casualties everywhere. I heard stories of a girl whose best friend vanished without a single word of goodbye, leaving behind a silence that felt like an open wound. I watched others play-pretend at relationships just to escape a different kind of loneliness, only to end up with nothing but resentment. Every story I gathered was a warning. Every heartbreak I witnessed was another heavy brick in the wall I was meticulously building around my heart.

Best friends are supposed to be the constant. In a world that is loud, chaotic, and temporary, they are the safe harbor. They are the ones who know the ugliest parts of your secrets without passing judgment. They stay when the rest of the world walks out.

But love? Love is a different beast entirely. Love comes with a ledger of expectations. It comes with a ticking clock, a fragile ego, and a high-stakes gamble I was never willing to play. I couldn't afford the risk. I couldn't afford to look at him one day and see a stranger.

I couldn't survive losing him.
