Delightful accounts of the distaff side of Victorian marriage, being biographies of the wives of famous men who were the shakers and movers of 19th century England: BONNET AND SHAWL by Philip Guedalla. With Portraits. Published by G. P. Putnam's Sons, New York, The Knickerbocker Press, 1928. ******************************************* Everyone knows Carlyle and Tennyson and Disraeli and Arnold and Gladstone and Palmerston; but how may of us are familiar with the wives of these famous movers and shakers of Victorian Society? They say that behind every famous man is a woman - and that holds all the more true for the famous men who were married. Philip Guedalla brings forth into the public lime light an ennead of delightfully intimate portraits of the wives of men who set the bar for literary taste and political discourse. It's an absolutely fascinating book. **************************************** The dust-jacket, which is usually among the missing, has a blurb that spotlights the genial pleasures of this worthy old book : "Guedalla's genius winks; and a flutter of crocodile tears falls on the page before him, to arrange itself into a pattern of glittering words. Here is Guedalla again, pricking with his bright jeweled pen the skins of England's most dignified talent. He has unerring aim for vulnerable spots. And so he draws a series of pictures of celebrities' wives: the women they courted, and married, and lived with the rest of their lives. "Here is Thomas Carlyle wooing Jane Welsh in his dour, awkward fashion. Gladstone and his Catherine, the homely incidents that made their lifelong devotion so touching. Disraeli marrying Mrs. Wyndham Lewis, who says, 'Dizzy married me for my money, but if he had the chance to again he would marry me for love.' Guedalla etches with acid - and achieves tenderness! Lady Palmerston is the last of the women whom the author catalogues as 'Real'. ************************************* "The next series of women are called 'Ideal'. Tenderness vanishes here; the pages crackle with malice. These imaginary scenes are recounted in Guedalla's own richly witty fashion. And out of these sketches now emerges a picture of nineteenth century England that is unique. The behind-the-scenes story of nineteenth century England has finally been written!" ************************************ CONTENTS (THE REAL): JANE WELSH CARLYLE / CATHERINE GLADSTONE / MARY ARNOLD / MARY ANNE DISRAELI / EMILY TENNYSON / EMILY PALMERSTON ************************************ (THE IDEAL) : LADY MURIEL JAMES / SOPHIA SWINBURNE / JULIA DE GONCOURT *************************************** TITLE : Bonnet and Shawl, an Album / AUTHOR : Philip Guedalla (1889 - 1944) / PLACE : New York / IMPRINT : G.
