The sun has been dead for three hundred years. She's starting to remember it.
Nyra Kareth is the heir of the first line — born into eternal night, raised beneath the Shroud her father drew across the sky, taught from her first feeding that the high blood feels nothing for the stock it drinks. Cruelty doesn't offend her. Disorder is the sin.
Then her father gives her a prisoner.
Jace is a Dawnbreaker — leader of the human resistance, the man who knows what's buried beneath the Citadel. Her task is simple: break him. Win his trust, open him up, deliver everything he knows. She's the best interrogator the order has ever made, and she doesn't need an iron to do it.
But something is wrong with her blood. The cup has started to carry a taste that shouldn't exist — warmth, gold, a sky she has never stood under. With every feeding she remembers more of a world she never knew. And in her father's dominion, remembering is the one crime that has no trial, no sentence, and no survivors.
Because the order knows what wakes in the blood. They've killed it before.
To learn what she's becoming, Nyra will have to choose between the father who built the dark and the prisoner teaching her to feel — knowing that what waits beneath the crypts could break the Shroud itself… or break her first.
BLOOD RITE is the first book of the Darkstar Saga: a dark fantasy of blood memory, buried suns, and the cost of waking — for readers of slow-burn forbidden romance, morally complicated monsters, and empires built on forgetting.
Written by D.E. Rice, kin to the late Anne Rice, in the gothic-vampire tradition she made immortal.
