When Sheriff Seth Levi of Sublette County, Wyoming calls to tell him a man has been found by Lake Freemont with his neck cut open and Harry’s name scrawled on a piece of paper in his pocket, Harry knows he must go back to Pinedale, where he had promised Doc Claire Erickson he would never return.

And when he gets there and sees his old friend Ernie Skinner, fellow Blade from the SAS, lying dead and waxy gray on the slab, he knows immediately why Ernie was killed, and he knows who had killed him. He died because he was a fearless messenger of retribution - and those who had killed him were the secretive Alqatala, a sect of psychopathic assassins who had sworn vengeance against Ernie years ago.

So now they had found him, they would go after the other names on their list: Dave, Bradley the Kiwi, and Harry Bauer, the Yank.

The time had come, then, for vengeance to be satiated: the time to finish the job he and Ernie had started all those years ago in Al-Landy, in Afghanistan – the job of revenge, blood for blood.
