Service. Secrets. Sacrifice.
Not even the Fates and Gods can stop what's coming.
A fate not of her choosing...
Born onto a path of service, Aisling Hawthorn's fate has never been of her own creation. A century ago, she gave her life to save her people from the Divide, but the Fates have called upon her again and again. Born to serve the Fates and the Gods, Ash knows no other path but one of loss, and there's no greater sacrifice than the life of an Everborne. Growing up in Hawthorn Forest, Ash is born to die in place of another, that is her only purpose in this life. But after tragedy befalls her forest and her family is slaughtered by the cursed from the Divide, Ash believes her sacrifices have only just begun. When she learns she is to be Fated to another, she is honored the Fates would grant her such a gift for her sacrifices. But when she learns she is to bond with the one person who had the power to save her forest and family but hadn't come to their call, she runs.
A gift she cannot return...
Unwilling to turn her back on the Fates, Ash accepts the path the Fates have designed for her. She arrives in the City of Dread after two years of hiding behind the walls of Fates Hallow, a place not even Destiny can invade. Holding the jagged shards of what's left of her heart, she comes face to face with her Fated, the one she blames for the death of her kin-Tadgh Darkwood, Commander of the Goyle Army. He is everything she despises. He is arrogant, aggressive, bloodthirsty, and, most of all, a mirror of herself. While Ash struggles to reconcile her new life and the one she was robbed of, she and her new brethren discover the dangers of the Divide are much greater than any had ever known. With a path shaped by nightmares and horrors, Ash plunges into her destiny, abandoning all hope of living through it. But when secrets come to light about the lives she once lived, Ash is torn between duty and desire.
A sacrifice she will not survive...
Only the cursed live within Fate's Divide-the prison for the damned and the wicked-but when the Fates and Gods collide, the darkness from within begins to eat away at every soul they can find. With her people being hunted and killed, Ash and Tadgh have no choice but to give themselves over to the fate neither of them wants. Fated to close the doorway between realms, Ash now walks a path made of broken promises, burned dreams, and the knowledge that her very blood is what will damn her world.
