Descripción del artículo del vendedor

San Francisco, 1984, 8°, VI, 33 pp., 4 Figs., orig. Broschur. With an Introduction by Arthur E. Lyons (VI pp.). Birth of modern Neurosurgery! "It was also in London at the Reagens Park Hospital that a physician, Alexander Hughes Bennett (1848-1901), prevailed upon the surgeon Rickman Godlee (1849-1825) to operate and remove a tumour of the brain in the fall of 1884. Although brain tumors had been removed before, this case was unique. This tumor had been diagnosed and localized by Bennett on the basis of abnormal neurological signs and symptoms alone. The patient, a 25-year-old man with focal seizures and progressive left hemiparesis, was diagnosed as having a tumour in the right cortical motor area. The surgery took place in the patient's refitted hospital room under the mist of carbolic acid that typified the prevailing antiseptic regimen. The hospital had no operation room. Godlee, a well trained general surgeon, had his instruments and equipment, which his anesthetist brought in from University College Hospital for the procedure. After induction of chloroform anesthesia, a cranitomy was established by connecting three threphine holes with a mallet and chisel. The site was calculated to be over the motor strip, utilizing lines drawn on the scalp based on external landmarks. The tumor, a glioma, was found just below the cortical surface and was removed without serious difficulty. Hemostasis was established with a hot cautery. The patient survived the procedure, awoke, and initially did well. Unfortunately, a brain fungus developed through the partially closed dura and breakdown of the scalp. The patient succumbed to uncontrolled purulent cerebritis 1 month later." "The Godlee-Bennett case, as it was known, created a sensation and was reported and followed in detail in the medical press. Since localization of the tumour was based on animal experimentation, it was used by the medical community to help combat the strong British antivivisection movement, which was extremly active at that time. Although the patient died, the case was considered a surgical success and a remarkable pioneering step." Since William Macewen's brillant contribution (1879) "took place far from the famous hospitals and medical men in London, . the general consensus is that the birth of neurosurgry took place not in Glasgow but in London." -cf. Arthur E.Lyons/ Samuel H. Greenblatt, Hist. Neurosurg., p.154f. The Original: - Garrison & Morton No.4858; Neurosurgical Classics, p.361-371; Walker, p.59, 80, 179.
