Biodiversity in managed landscape : theory and practice

The conservation of biodiversity has profound implications for managing natural resources. There is a need for scientific information as a foundation for management decisions. This book looks beyond the theory of biodiversity to the principles, practices, and policies needed for its conservation. It provides the scientific basis for understanding biodiversity, documents case examples of theory and concepts applied at differing scales, and examines policies that affect its conservation. Issues addressed include: genetic, species, landscape and community diversity, setting objectives and priorities, monitoring and assessment, management strategies and policy and social considerations.

"This book does a remarkable job of covering all aspects of biodiversity--from the genetic level to landscapes, and from scientific theory to recommendations for policy development . . . . There is something here for everyone with an interest in international ecological issues, conservation biology, and the associated management options . . . . Resource managers, ecologists, conservation biologists, and others will find this book to be an excellent desktop reference for the biodiversity issue. The array of topics and the extensive literature citations would make even the most discerning scientists happy." --BioScience"A good mixture of temperate and tropical papers, with participation by several foreign researchers, particularly from Australia. . .This will be an important book for those people involved with conservation and management of natural resources. . .An excellent choice for a graduate seminar if the price were lower." --The Condor "This book does a remarkable job of covering all aspects of biodiversity--from the genetic level to landscapes, and from scientific theory to recommendations for policy development . . . .
