First novel of the prolific Western author, with charming color oval portrait of the West Virginia heroine (yes, that was once "The West" -- though not much after 1820) pasted to front board, as well as frontispiece and three internal glossy B&W plates by Louis F. Grant. Bookplate of William J. Wendt of Waterloo, Wis. to front pastedown. Ads at rear list Jack London novels through "John Barleycorn" and "Valley of the Moon" (both 1913), but NOT "Mutiny of the Elsinore" (1914), nor "The Scarlet Plague" nor "The Star Rover" (both 1915). List of Zane Grey titles includes "Rainbow Trail" (1915) and "Border Legion" (1916) but NOT "Wildfire" (1917) nor "The U.P. Trail" (1918), giving us our estimated G&D print date. 291 pp., followed by 4 pp. publisher's ads. Reduced from $14.
