It shows which word combinations exist in English and which grammatical constructions are possible. Whenever possible, the collocations are listed under the noun, so that in order to find out, for instance, which verb goes with oath, one simply looks up oath and finds to administer an oath to smb; to swear, take an oath, etc. The BBI is an invaluable tool for tasks such as letter writing and translating and an ideal text for intermediate and advanced instruction in English. It gives 70,000 collocations and phrases under a total of 14,000 main entries, while every effort has been made to exclude superfluous constructions such as those predictable on the basis of the general rules of English syntax.
