Irish-born American poet whose work is infused with Irish legend; books include verse collections "A Hosting of Heroes" (1911) and "Singing Fires of Erin" (1916). Two items: First, an ALS, 1p, 5½" X 8½", New York, NY, 1922 January 7. Addressed to Albert Johannsen (1871-1962), a University of Chicago geology professor who authored "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" (1950), the definitive reference work on the subject. Near fine. Nice content summing up her work: "My poetry in general has been so sheerly devoted to Beauty, and the stanzas of nearly all the poems are so interwoven, that I find it very difficult to give a single representative quotation. While the stanzas enclosed are not, I know, my best, yet they do represent two very strong and dominating sentiments of my life." Large bold signature. Second, an AQS, 1p, 8½" X 11", n.p., 1922 January 7. Near fine. Cox introduces one stanza celebrating her Irish heritage and another celebrating her adopted homeland. "Representative of my love for my birth-land, Ireland, here is the concluding stanza of a poem, pencilled in a note-book, on beholding, from the deck of the 'Cameronia' in the mists of the early morning, the lights of Tory Island (Summer of 1913)," followed by these lines: "Ireland! Ireland! Ireland! / Gleaning to greet us there -- / Flame on the hills of our souls thou art, / Vision and Dream and Prayer." She then introduces a second stanza: "And representative of my devotion to the United States is this stanza from a poem entitled 'Our Country,'" with an 8-line verse, "Yes! our Country. Say it over / In some phrase divinely wrought; / Words that shall contain the essence / Of our souls, our lives, our thought. / Land to Freedom consecrated -- / Mount and stream and fertile sod, / Land upon whose forehead, star-like, / Shines the name of Freedom's God." Boldly signed in full at the conclusion. Accompanied by Johannsen's original 8½" X 11" file folder, bearing a printed "Collection of Albert Johannsen" label (partly filled in by Johannsen).
