The author views disease as a misalignment or misattunement to one's true sense of expression in the world and considers how the arts restore a sense of balance through affective sensory states, bringing a more profound sense of alignment and awakening to each moment. He discusses how the arts in practice and therapeutic contexts allow for expanded ways of being attuned to emotional states and life conditions with individuals, relationships, groups, and communities, including the importance of play and understanding misattunement. He draws on theory and practice to detail how the arts can be used therapeutically for mental, emotional, and spiritual health and discusses the concept of creativity and the idea of an embodied creative intelligence; the act of tuning in during improvisation; the role of rhythm and resonance in connecting to the self, other, and universal consciousness; and tuning in as a deliberate act. This edition has been revised to include a section on attunement to individual, group, and community trauma; new sections that address how the application of the arts in practice and therapy can bring about states of embodied attunement; an expanded section on entrainment in relation to expressive arts; and added sections on research related to interpersonal rhythmic attunement and embodied empathy and the connections between resonance, entrainment, the mirror neuron system, and interpersonal neurobiology.
