"Atomic Structure and Spectral Lines" is a foundational text in the history of modern physics, authored by the renowned theoretical physicist Arnold Sommerfeld. This comprehensive work serves as a definitive guide to the transition between classical physics and the burgeoning field of quantum mechanics during the early 20th century. At its core, the book explores the intricate relationship between the internal configuration of the atom and the observable patterns of light emitted or absorbed in atomic spectra.

Sommerfeld provides a rigorous examination of the Bohr model and introduces his own significant refinements, including the application of relativistic mechanics and the introduction of elliptical orbits. Through detailed mathematical analysis and physical reasoning, the text covers essential topics such as quantum numbers, the fine structure of hydrogen-like atoms, and the Zeeman effect. By bridging the gap between experimental observations in spectroscopy and the theoretical frameworks of the time, Sommerfeld offers a profound look at the architecture of matter. This work remains a vital resource for historians of science and students of physics, capturing a pivotal moment of discovery that reshaped our understanding of the subatomic world and laid the groundwork for contemporary quantum theory.
