A practical guide to stargazing with an opera-glass
This book teaches beginners how to enjoy the night sky and learn from what they can see with a simple field glass. It argues that astronomy is a lively, approachable science, not just a subject for specialists. You’ll find clear tips for choosing and using an opera-glass, plus practical ideas for observing the Moon, planets, and bright star groups.
Framed around the year’s seasonal skies, the book divides the constellations into Stars of Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter. It shows how to locate familiar figures, read simple star maps, and notice the rich background of faint stars that becomes visible with practice. The text also explains why the Milky Way looks different in various parts of the sky and how to make the most of a clear night. You’ll also see how astronomy blends wonder with learning. The author shares historical notes, describes notable objects like the Andromeda Nebula, and discusses how observing can be both delightful and instructive. The material comes from articles originally written for a popular audience, revised and expanded for this edition.

Reseña del editor
Being convinced that whoever will survey the heavens with a good opera-glass will feel repaid many fold for his time and labor, I have undertaken to point out some of the objects most worthy of attention, and some of the means of making acquaintance with the stars.
First, a word about the instrument to be used. Galileo made his famous discoveries with what was, in principle of construction, Simply an opera-glass. This form of telescope was afterward abandoned because very high magnifying pow ers could not be employed with it, and the field of view was restricted. But, on account of its brilliant illumination of objects looked at, and its convenience of form, the opera-glass is still a valuable and, in some respects, unrivaled instrument of observation.
