THE ARBATEL OF MAGICThe Spiritual Wisdom of the AncientsArbatel de magia veterum (Arbatel of Magick): A New Ethical Translation of the Isagoge - 49 Aphorisms in Seven Septenaries, with Commentary--- --- --- --- --- --- PAPERBACK VERSION ---The Arbatel of Magic is one of the most unusual books of "magic" ever written - because it insists, again and again, that true power is not coercion, not spectacle, and not commerce with darkness, but wisdom governed by God, conscience, and lawful order.First printed in Latin in 1575 as Arbatel de magia veterum, this short Renaissance treatise presents an ethical theurgy: a disciplined path of spiritual intelligence, prayer, and discernment, arranged as 49 aphorisms in seven septenaries. It distinguishes divine and beneficial arts from corrupt and destructive ones, and it frames the world as a hierarchy of meaning in which angels, nature, and the human mind operate under permission, measure, and responsibility. This edition offers a clean, philosophically coherent reading experience for serious readers - restoring the Arbatel's original intent as a work of spiritual wisdom rather than sensational "grimoire" theater. In this volume you will find: A parallel-text format pairing Robert Turner's historic 1655 English with a new ethical modern rendering (for clarity, cadence, and conceptual precision)A Reader's Orientation on how to approach the Arbatel as a moral and contemplative textA clear explanation of the Arbatel's key themes: secrecy, prayer, vocation, order, and the lawful use of creationA substantial set of appendices, including a map of the "Nine Tomes," a glossary of key terms, a sober interpretive dossier on the Olympic Spirits, and reference concordancesA careful editorial method designed to preserve what is essential while removing confusion, distortion, and sensational framingThe Arbatel does not promise domination. It teaches sobriety. It does not invite obsession. It demands discernment. It does not glorify rebellion. It calls the reader back to order - so that knowledge becomes service, and power becomes responsibility. For collectors of esoteric classics, students of Renaissance spirituality, and readers seeking a dignified alternative to chaotic occultism, The Arbatel of Magic stands as a concise, luminous manual of the "wisdom of the ancients" - ordered, devotional, and ethically awake. The Spiritual Wisdom of the Ancients
Arbatel de magia veterum (Arbatel of Magick): A New Ethical Translation of the Isagoge - 49 Aphorisms in Seven Septenaries, with Commentary
--- --- --- --- ---
--- PAPERBACK VERSION ---
The Arbatel of Magic is one of the most unusual books of “magic” ever written - because it insists, again and again, that true power is not coercion, not spectacle, and not commerce with darkness, but wisdom governed by God, conscience, and lawful order.
First printed in Latin in 1575 as Arbatel de magia veterum, this short Renaissance treatise presents an ethical theurgy: a disciplined path of spiritual intelligence, prayer, and discernment, arranged as 49 aphorisms in seven septenaries. It distinguishes divine and beneficial arts from corrupt and destructive ones, and it frames the world as a hierarchy of meaning in which angels, nature, and the human mind operate under permission, measure, and responsibility.
This edition offers a clean, philosophically coherent reading experience for serious readers - restoring the Arbatel’s original intent as a work of spiritual wisdom rather than sensational “grimoire” theater.
In this volume you will find:
-
A parallel-text format pairing Robert Turner’s historic 1655 English with a new ethical modern rendering (for clarity, cadence, and conceptual precision)
-
A Reader’s Orientation on how to approach the Arbatel as a moral and contemplative text
-
A clear explanation of the Arbatel’s key themes: secrecy, prayer, vocation, order, and the lawful use of creation
-
A substantial set of appendices, including a map of the “Nine Tomes,” a glossary of key terms, a sober interpretive dossier on the Olympic Spirits, and reference concordances
-
A careful editorial method designed to preserve what is essential while removing confusion, distortion, and sensational framing
The Arbatel does not promise domination. It teaches sobriety. It does not invite obsession. It demands discernment. It does not glorify rebellion. It calls the reader back to order - so that knowledge becomes service, and power becomes responsibility.
For collectors of esoteric classics, students of Renaissance spirituality, and readers seeking a dignified alternative to chaotic occultism, The Arbatel of Magic stands as a concise, luminous manual of the “wisdom of the ancients” - ordered, devotional, and ethically awake.
