One morning, Xavier Silvestre wakes up to an empty Polaroid sitting on his bed-and slowly uncovers a bewildering truth: as a way to cope with heartbreak, he's been dumping memories of his ex-boyfriend, Sam Wilde, into photographs. Sam, the man who blurred the line between curiosity and love, has literally been erased from his mind.

What begins as a strange oddity becomes an obsessive scavenger hunt across New York City, forcing Xavier to chase down pieces of his own past. From sleek cocktail bars in Lower Manhattan to grimy photo studios in Bushwick, he hunts for his missing memories between bouts of crying, drunk sex, and bad decisions. But every photo he develops brings back more questions than answers-and the closer he gets to the truth, the more he must face what really broke them.

Anatomy of a Photo, Walter Menendez's amateur debut, is a queer speculative novel about memory, photography, and the beautiful gay delusions that make us fall in love with the wrong people.
