American Melodies; Containing A Single Selection From the Production of Two Hundred Writers. Compiled by George P. Morris, With Illustrations Designed and Engraved by L.P. Clover, Jr., Published by Linen and Fennell, New York, 1841, 282 pp plus index, original blind stamped black leather, frontis, engraved title and two plates, 6 x 4 , 18mo. In as-is condition. Rear board detached, front board and end papers are detaching as well, attached by two cords. Moderate scuffing to extremities with dryness and wear to edges. Gilt tooling bright on spine and front board. Spine abraded with creasing. Old hand ownership on front fly leaf. Chipping to frontispiece with age-staining and toning throughout. Splotchy instances of foxing. Overall soiled and worn. Binding intact. Please see photos. An important anthology of American poetry that includes early and first appearances by Emma Willard, Albert Pike, Holmes, Bryant, Longfellow, Whittier, Simms and the first version of the most famous American songs, Robert Montgomery Birds God Bless America .
