First published as a single volume in 1827, this final two-volume edition holds a prominent place in Jacksonian-era diplomacy. It was officially adopted by Secretary of State Louis McLane for departmental use and distributed systematically to all active U.S. diplomatic agents and consuls abroad. In addition, Secretary of the Navy Mahlon Dickerson ordered copies for distribution across naval stations and public vessels. While subsequent official treaty series eventually overtook Elliot's work, it remains a heavily utilized resource for its contemporary legal apparatus, particularly Elliot's curation of related early judicial decisions and summaries of international law.
