Descripción

The American Cyclopedia: A Popular Dictionary of General Knowledge, Vol. 1-16(plus Index), Edited by George Ripley and Charles A. Dana, was published by D. Appleton and Company in 1881. None of the books is an ex-library copy; all are in either G or G+ condition. Several of the 6 1/2" X 9 3/4", 131-year-old volumes(5,6,8,11,14,16) display various family names(the Gilmores, of Waupaca, Wisconsin, FYI), in faded ink, or pencil, on the blank side of front loose end pages, and on reverse/blank side of back loose end page of Vol. 6. A 2 7/8"-long loose portion of edging is seen along top, inside border of front cover board of Vol. 8. There is sporadic underlining, in light blue ink, as well as a couple brief marginal notes, between pages 117-120, Vol. 4. Pages 180-181 of Vol. 11 evidence some light brown staining from an old, pressed leaf I discovered, and removed, during my inspection. The ONLY ENDPAPER MISSING is the front loose end page, Vol. 1, and there is a resultant somewhat noticeable separation between front cover board and first blank page following the missing loose end page. Cover boards are brown-on-brown, 3/4 leather. Decorations on Endpapers are presented upon a rich, cranberry background. This, Reader, is the Revised Edition, 1879, of what is commonly referred to, I believe, as "The Americana". This was one of the very first, and a very highly respected, set of encyclopedias published in the United States and has its place in the reference room of a scholar, or university library, evidencing from whence we started. It is a still functional, complete, 17-book set consisting of over 14,300 pages of content, hundreds of Illustrations(highlighted by many, many reproductions of the pinpoint wood engravings of John Filmer), and dozens of one and two-page maps, in full, but muted, colors, all Edited under the exacting eye of one John D. Champlin, Jr. Each volume has a back-end "Supplement"(for inclusion of entries omitted by mistake, or entries deemed, upon further reflection, worthy of addition); each volume is equipped with its own topical Index. THE HARD-TO-FIND, invaluable, 810-page, MASTER INDEX, published in 1882, was painstakingly compiled by The Rev. T.J. Conant, distinguished(at that time) Biblical scholar/teacher/translator, with the faithful, selfless assistance of his daughter, Blandina(!). Just some of the more recognizable of the scores of Contributors of articles include Ralph Waldo Emerson, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Rossiter Johnson, Nathan Hale, Jr., Henry Ware, Julius Bing, James Russell Lowell, Horace Greeley, and Karl Marx. NOTE: This set's Editors, Ripley and Dana, were, in an earlier time, the appointed leader and a prominent member, respectively, of the Emerson-inspired, Transcendentalist community, Brook Farm, at West Roxbury, Mass., established in 1841 and dissolved some six years later, having fallen somewhat short of becoming/achieving their sought-after New England Utopia. Needless to say, "The Americana", Revised Edition, 1879, complete, is very much a historic, literary slice of Americana, as the 19th century was gradually drawing to a close. We are NOT, regrettably, making this weighty, 17-book offering AVAILABLE TO INTERNATIONAL BUYERS due to the prohibitive cost of shipping same outside U.S. borders/overseas. Thank you very much!!.
