What is an orchestra? What does it do? What happens inside it? Quite simply, an orchestra is the most complex, powerful and frequently the most satisfying means of performing music. Composed of many instruments, it is itself an instrument greater than the sum of its parts. Once a child has heard a good orchestra under live and favourable circumstances, the effect is likely to be one of awe and intense curiosity. This book is intended to create those favourable circumstances. In this presentation the orchestra as a whole and its various voices are introduced and described but never entirely demystified.
