Hardcover. "Akan-Ashanti Folk-Tales" is a landmark collection of oral literature from the Akan people of present-day Ghana. Compiled by the renowned anthropologist R. S. Rattray, this volume captures the rich narrative traditions, wisdom, and humor of the Ashanti culture. The collection features a diverse array of stories, most notably the clever exploits of Ananse the Spider, the legendary trickster figure whose influence extends throughout West African culture and across the African diaspora. Each tale provides profound insight into the social values, religious beliefs, and philosophical outlook of the Akan people. Beyond their entertainment value, these stories served as a primary means of education and cultural preservation within the community. Rattray's meticulous documentation ensures that the linguistic nuances and rhythmic qualities of the original oral performances are honored, offering readers a window into the vibrant intellectual and literary heritage of West Africa. This work remains an essential resource for students of folklore, anthropology, and African history, as well as anyone captivated by the universal power of storytelling.
