She was twenty when he found her. He was forty. He called it mentorship. She called it love. It took her ten years to find a different word.

Elara Quinn is thirty, a video editor in Silver Lake, Los Angeles, quietly successful and quietly haunted by a relationship she still can't name. At twenty, she was a Film Studies student at Braddock University, singled out by Professor Maddox Hale - a brilliant, magnetic academic who told her she was exceptional. He gave her private reading lists. He invited her to his office before anyone else arrived. He built a world around her so warm and intellectually intoxicating that she didn't recognize it as a cage until years after she'd walked out.

Now, scrolling through his Instagram at midnight on her thirtieth birthday, Elara spots a young woman in the background of a faculty photo - dark-haired, twenty-one, leaning toward Maddox with an expression Elara knows from the inside. The same books. The same breathless gratitude. The same slow, deliberate disappearance into a man who takes up all the oxygen in a room and makes it feel like a gift.

Her name is Zoe Marchetti. She's the age Elara was when he found her.

What begins as obsessive surveillance becomes something more dangerous: an investigation. Elara drives back to the campus she hasn't visited in a decade. She connects with Margaux, another of Maddox's former students. Together, they uncover his private journals - handwritten entries spanning twenty-two years that document what he calls his "methodology" the systematic selection, elevation, isolation, and emotional consumption of young women. He refined his technique across five relationships. He kept notes. He wrote "next time" while still inside the current cycle.

As Elara maps the architecture of her own manipulation, she's forced to confront a deeper truth: the pattern didn't start at Braddock. It started at fourteen, on a porch in Oregon, with a man who called her "old soul" and taught her to see the world through his lens.

Moving between Elara at thirty - sharp, analytical, unraveling the pattern from the outside - and Elara at twenty - brilliant, hungry, walking willingly into a room she didn't know had a lock - The Age I Was When You Found Me is a novel about the architecture of coercive control, the seduction of being chosen, and the devastating courage it takes to name a thing that powerful people would prefer to leave unnamed.

This is not a story about rescue. It's a story about naming. And sometimes, naming is enough.
