Print on Demand. This book delves into the captivating realm of aerial flight, unraveling the intricate scientific principles that govern the movement of objects through fluids like air and water. It embarks on a journey through the historical understanding of fluid dynamics, exploring early theories and experiments that laid the foundation for modern aeronautics. The author meticulously dissects the forces at play, such as lift and drag, and delves into the concepts of streamline form and the role of viscosity in shaping the behaviour of fluids around objects in motion. This exploration extends to the fascinating phenomenon of "peripteral motion" ââ â the intricate dance of air around a bird's wing or an aircraft's lifting surface, and how it generates the forces necessary for flight. With a blend of theoretical analysis and practical insights, the book delves into the design and efficiency of aeroplanes, propellers, and other flying machines. It unveils the delicate balance between factors like velocity, wing area, and power, offering a glimpse into the challenges and triumphs of early flight pioneers. The book concludes by examining groundbreaking experimental research conducted by the author and other prominent figures in the field, providing valuable data and observations that continue to inform our understanding of flight. By illuminating the fundamental principles of aerodynamics, this book offers profound insights into the mechanics of flight and the remarkable ingenuity of those who dared to conquer the skies. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

This volume presents early aerodynamics theory and experiment, connecting how planes interact with air to sustain flight. It highlights the inclined aeroplane, the effects of aspect, and how pressure, velocity, and flow patterns govern performance. The discussion blends practical experiments with analytical ideas to explain how a flying machine remains aloft.
Rich with historical experiments and foundational concepts, it traces how different plane shapes and configurations influence load, center of pressure, and the efficiency of propulsion. The work emphasizes the interplay between theory and measurement, and how real fluid behavior shapes the quest for stable, efficient flight.
- Grasp how angle, aspect, and plan-form affect pressure distribution and lift
- Explore comparisons across plane types, including apteroid and pterygoid forms
- See how multiple planes interact and how flow discontinuities influence performance
- Understand the link between theory, experiment, and the practical design of aerofoils
Ideal for readers of the history of flight and early aerodynamic science, this edition provides a clear look at the science that underpins how all flying machines stay in the air.

Reseña del editor
The problems that arise in connection with the study of Aerial Flight are so numerous and of so diverse a character that, except for their relation to the title subject, they would scarcely find place in one volume. In the present work an attempt is made, it is believed for the first time, to treat the classification of the phenomena associated withthe study of Flight on a comprehensive and scientific basis, The origin of the present work may be said to date from some experiments carried out in the year 1894. These experiments, which were primarily directed as a test of certain theoretical views which the author then advanced, resulted In the production Of flying models of remarkable stability, whose equilibrium was not destroyed by an ordinary gale of wind.
As originally formulated the theory was incomplete and in many ways imperfect, but it has been developed from time to time during the last twelve years to an extent that to-day renders the approximately correct proportioning of an aerodrome1 a matter of straightforward calculation.
