Paperback. "The Advancing South; Stories of Progress and Reaction" offers an insightful examination of the intellectual and social evolution of the American South during a pivotal era of modernization. Edwin Mims provides a comprehensive survey of the tensions between traditionalist sentiments and the burgeoning progressive movements that sought to redefine the region's identity in the early twentieth century. Through a series of compelling narratives, the work explores the development of Southern universities, the growth of industry, and the shifting political landscape that challenged the post-Reconstruction status quo.The work highlights the efforts of educators, journalists, and civic leaders who campaigned for social justice, economic development, and academic freedom. By documenting both the "progress" of forward-thinking initiatives and the "reaction" of conservative forces, Mims creates a nuanced portrait of a region in flux. This volume serves as an essential historical document for understanding the cultural and social forces that shaped the "New South." "The Advancing South" remains a significant contribution to the study of American regional history, providing deep context for the ongoing dialogue between tradition and transformation in the United States. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
