Additive Manufacturing of Architected Metamaterials: Design, Properties, and Applications provides readers with a deep understanding of the design, manufacturing, properties, and applications of these materials. Chapters cover modeling and numerical techniques, experimental approaches for investigating mechanical properties, as well as the thermal, electromagnetic, and corrosion fatigue properties of these materials. Design techniques, microstructure, and topology are each discussed as well. Materials covered include additive manufactured lattice structures, cellular lattice materials, acoustic and elastic locally resonant metamaterials, rationally designed cellular metamaterials, optical metamaterials, biological metamaterials, high strength strut-based lattices, and more. The book concludes with a chapter focused on data-driven design and artificial intelligence for architected metamaterials.

Professor Matteo Benedetti is Associate Professor of Machine Design at the University of Trento, where he has been a faculty member since 2007. He received his PhD in Materials Engineering from the University of Trento in 2004. He has held visiting researcher positions at the Technical University of Hamburg-Harburg (Germany) and at McGill University (Canada).

His research interests include the experimental characterization and modelling of the mechanical behavior of materials under static and cyclic loading, fatigue and structural integrity of additively manufactured lattice and cellular materials, measurement and modelling of residual stress fields, and their incorporation into fatigue design methodologies. He has co-authored more than 150 journal papers and over 150 conference contributions, receiving more than 6000 citations.

Professor Benedetti has delivered invited seminars and plenary lectures at international conferences and has served as Chair of the Technical Division on Residual Stresses of the Society for Experimental Mechanics (USA). He currently serves as Associate Editor for Materials & Design, Materials Design & Processing Communications, and Additive Manufacturing Letters.

Professor Filippo Berto is Chair Professor of Mechanics of Materials at Sapienza Università di Roma, a position he has held since 2022, following a long academic career at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. Since 2002, his research has focused on fracture mechanics, fatigue design, and structural integrity of materials and components.

He has received several prestigious international recognitions, including the Wöhler Medal awarded in 2021 by the European Society of Structural Integrity for his outstanding contributions to fatigue research. Since 2021, he has served as President of the Italian Group of Fracture, one of the most active international scientific communities in the field of structural integrity.

Professor Berto is Editor-in-Chief or Senior Editor of leading international journals in mechanics and materials engineering and has authored several hundred scientific publications.

Nima Shamsaei is currently the Philpott-WestPoint Stevens Distinguished Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Auburn University, where he is also the founding director of the National Center for Additive Manufacturing Excellence (NCAME), a NASA and NIST funded research center focused on advancing the additive manufacturing (AM) technology. NCAME is also one of the two U.S.-based founding partners of the ASTM International Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence (AM CoE) with the aim to guide multi-disciplinary research and foster effective collaborations amongst industry, government, academia, and non-profit organizations for ensuring a coordinated, global effort for rapidly closing standards and workforce development gaps in advanced manufacturing. Prior to joining academia, Dr. Shamsaei spent many years in industry, including in leadership positions, specializing in fatigue analysis and durability test development. Dr. Shamsaei then took his skillset to Mississippi State University in 2013 and initiated a university level AM research track. The focus of his research was on the structural integrity of AM metallic materials, which is his continued primary area of interest at Auburn University. His research work has resulted so far in publishing over 300 peer-reviewed journal articles and conference proceedings as well as 130+ technical presentations including 60+ invited talks or keynote/plenary speeches in the areas of fatigue, fracture, mechanics of materials, and AM material/part qualification, certification, and standardization. Several government agencies and private companies sponsor many of his research projects in order to advance AM technology for faster industrial adoption. He has served as the guest editor for the International Journal of Fatigue 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th special issues on Additive Manufacturing in 2017, 2019, 2021, and 2022 as well as the Journal of Materials Processing Technology’s 1st and 2nd special issues on AM Process Qualification in 2021 and 2022. Dr. Shamsaei also organizes multiple AM-related symposia and conferences in ASTM, TMS, and ASME.
