This book is "an antidote to feelings of powerlessness and despair”.
The quality of our felt experience of life has gone down. Loss and struggle (and the resulting disempowerment and grief)— have become an absolute phenomenon across the world. People are anxious, stressed, miserable and afraid, as the middle classes fall into poverty at record rates, and the biosphere on which we all depend for life, deteriorates alarmingly. Many of us are feeling hopeless. Suicides are at record levels — particularly in men and the younger generations.
We don't know what we can meaningfully do to actively turn things around — not just now and for ourselves — but in the bigger picture too.
When her life was turned upside down by terrifyingly changing circumstances, Petra lost ‘her Self’ in a trap of anxiety, stress and despair. She couldn’t make sense of how life could go so awry, despite having ticked all the boxes! She discovered eventually that there is a way to purposefully direct our lives and Selves lives back to something that both works and holds joy and possibilities itself!
Afterwards, she wrote The Actual Normal: the book she needed to read at her lowest, most desperate point. It is a book for these unprecedentedly volatile, changing times we’re living through.
Speaking to those struggling with painful challenges, Petra shows how to respond powerfully to personal difficulty, offering readers a practical toolkit for transformation out of dead-end predicaments and pain, and a return to quality-of-life experience.
Because in these volatile times of change and great uncertainty, the world needs people to be coming out of their best Selves, not their most broken ones.
Combining self-reflection, cultural commentary and lessons drawn from the deep philosophies of the wisest minds the planet has known, the book is filled with insights and takeaways for everyone in the trenches of change and loss. Ultimately, The Actual Normal is an accessible and illuminating guide that forges a new and practical philosophy for modern times, by encouraging readers to find the personal opportunity in uncertainty, embracing change and the growth that comes with it.
WHAT YOU WILL FIND IN THIS BOOK:
- Gain counterintuitive insights into how our modern Culturescape has derailed us and generates suffering (particularly in the aspirational middle-classes) — and learn why this is significant.

- Discover the Truths of what Life is really about, and the fundamental realities that govern Human survival, personal power and possibility.
- Learn the unique and extraordinary power of the Human Being, uncovering what your power really lies in and how to access it.
- Navigate Change powerfully, to improve your felt experience of Life.
- Cultivate resilience, managing your perspectives and attitudes out of a grounded, peaceful Self, and remain hopeful.
- Show up with integrity, courage and perseverance despite an uncertain and changing world.
