The text, which is presented mainly as a midwifery manual, mixes practical instruction with superstition and cautionary tales. Readers at the time used it for advice on childbirth, sexual conduct, and venereal disease. This copy is illustrated with colored plates of child development in utero, as well as in-text woodcuts of birth defects and physiognomy instructions. Sextodecimo (16mo), single volume. Good condition; the binding and text block are secure, with some fraying and rubbing to the corners and boards, with mild to moderate foxing internally, though pages are clean and plates retain their color. Collation: viii, 9352 pp. Illustrations: 8 total, including colored frontispiece and title page with 6 additional hand-colored plates; several in-text woodcuts throughout.
