[ii], 304 pages + [3]-140, followed by [ii] pages of publisher's advertisement. This is two volumes bound as one, with the second volume covering the southern and western states. Original red hardcover cloth binding with elaborate gilt decoration; slightly rubbed at extremities, and overall slightly soiled. Inner front hinge is weakened before title page, but remains attached. Illustrated by 45 plates of maps and city views, as well as numerous in-text engraved vignettes. Three of the plates are large fold-outs maps and are hand-colored. There is minor misfolding of these large fold-outs. There is minor scattered foxing, mostly in the second part. Title of the first volume continues ".Cities of the Union, and Numerous Engravings." The full title of the second volume is: "Southern and Western Travellers' Guide: with New and Authentic Maps, Illustrating those Divisions of the Country; and Containing Sectional Maps of the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers; with Plans of Cities, Views, etc. Forming a Compete Guide to the Falls at St. Anthony; Mammoth Cave, Ky.; Virginia Springs; the Tour of the Great Rivers of the West; The Great Lakes; the Copper Region of Lake Superior, etc.; and Containing Full and Accurate Descriptions of the Principal Cities, Towns, and Villages, with Distances, Fares, etc." Bookseller's ticket on front pastedown endpaper 'A. P. Pfister Montgomery, Ala." Previous owner's red ink stamp "John Getz" on front endpapers. Getz was apparently the U.S. Ambassador to Malta in 1972. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.
