In a world that often moves too quickly, The Resting Place: Thoughts Along the Way invites readers to pause, reflect, and rediscover the quiet truths that give life meaning.
Drawing on a lifetime of public service, international experience, spiritual reflection, and personal loss, James E.H. Mayer offers a collection of essays and poetry that speaks to the universal experiences of faith, forgiveness, grief, gratitude, compassion, hope, and the enduring search for peace within the human heart.
Rather than offering simple answers, these reflections encourage readers to embrace life's joys and sorrows with honesty, humility, and grace. Whether confronting seasons of uncertainty, celebrating moments of unexpected joy, or seeking renewed purpose, readers will find thoughtful companionship in these pages.
Written over many years and now thoughtfully revised and updated, The Resting Place is not intended to be read quickly. It is a book to return to again and again—one essay, one poem, one quiet moment at a time.
For anyone searching for encouragement, deeper perspective, or simply a place to rest amid life's demands, this collection offers timeless wisdom and gentle hope for the journey ahead.

James E.H. Mayer is a retired U.S. government official, author, and lifelong public servant whose career spanned international development, diplomacy, leadership, and cross-cultural engagement across Asia and other regions of the world. His years living and working in the Republic of Korea profoundly shaped his understanding of resilience, compassion, and disciplined hope.Throughout his career, Mayer served in a variety of international leadership and public service roles, experiences that later inspired both his leadership writings and his reflective spiritual essays. He is the author of The Long Arc of Leadership and is currently completing the five-book Harry Hudson Cold War espionage series, which explores themes of identity, loyalty, sacrifice, and moral complexity during the turbulent decades of the 1960s and 1970s.The Resting Place: Thoughts Along the Way reflects a more personal dimension of Mayer's life journey. Through essays and poetry written over many years, he explores faith, forgiveness, grief, healing, gratitude, compassion, and the enduring search for peace within the human heart. Drawing on family, spiritual reflection, decades of public service, and experiences across cultures, he writes with humility, honesty, and quiet insight about the struggles-and the grace-that shape a meaningful life.Mayer remains active in efforts that strengthen friendship and cultural understanding between the United States and the Republic of Korea. He and his wife, Yongbok Lee Mayer, maintain deep personal ties to Korea and its people. He resides in Southern California.
