Sinopsis

Family Is the Recipe is the story of five generations of one family, told through food, restaurants, immigration, Fisherman’s Wharf, and the recipes that changed along the way.

Michael Sabella grew up in a San Francisco restaurant family whose roots reach back to fishermen in Sciacca, Sicily. From his great-grandfather Luciano crossing an ocean in search of opportunity, to generations of Sabellas building lives around seafood, family tables, and Fisherman’s Wharf, food was never just something they cooked. It was how the family worked, celebrated, survived, argued, remembered, and stayed connected.

Michael was raised in that world. He learned the restaurant business from the ground up, worked alongside relatives and employees from many different cultures, became a chef and restaurant owner, and eventually built a career that stretched far beyond the Wharf. Along the way came fires, family businesses, famous customers, culinary school, West Portal, Sysco, teaching, military foodservice, five children, ten grandchildren—and more than a few stories that probably could only happen in a restaurant family.

The recipes are woven into the story because that is where they belong. Some came from Sicily. Others changed as ingredients, neighborhoods, cultures, and generations changed. The fifth generation adds Persian, Nicaraguan-American, Southern, Mexican, Irish, Italian, and other influences to the family table.

Filled with family photographs, restaurant history, recipes, humor, and memories, Family Is the Recipe is not simply a cookbook or a memoir. It is a look at what happens when traditions are handed down for more than a century—and every generation decides to change them just a little.

Because recipes change.

Family doesn’t.
