Sinopsis

Ann Tickner, a leading scholar of feminist international relations, provides a collection of essays reminiscing on her life -- from growing up in wartime and post-war England to launching new international relations courses at College of the Holy Cross in Massachusetts and the University of Southern California.

She describes memories of her parents and grandparents, sheltering from bombs during the war, and life in an English public school. A move to the United States, graduate school, marriage, and motherhood followed, all of which Tickner describes in lively prose. Once her children were settled in school, she obtained her PhD and launched a new career in international relations.

Throughout her career, Tickner strived to advance a female perspective in an arena where diplomacy often gives way to war between patriarchal-dominated countries. She had to ignore those who doubted or criticized her unconventional research into the "hidden voices" of women, minorities, indigenous peoples, and others often forgotten. In other words, she had to "pull up her socks and get on with it." In 2006, she was elected president of the International Studies Association.

Tickner also describes the unwavering support of her late husband, international relations professor Hayward Alker. The couple's interests were grounded in the Quaker faith and advocacy for peace. In her last essays, she laments about rising world conflicts but also celebrates the continued work of her former students.
