What do older women know about resilience that the rest of us risk losing?
Drawing on original doctoral research and conversations with twenty-eight women between the ages of sixty-five and ninety-six, Where Is Grandma? explores how resilience is constructed and reconstructed across a lifetime.
The women spoke about illness, widowhood, financial strain, displacement, caregiving, work, friendship, family, gardens, animals, and the ordinary practices that helped them continue. Their accounts reveal resilience not as a fixed trait that some people possess and others lack, but as something built through daily habits, inner resources, relationships, and the refusal to be defined by adversity.
Their experiences came together in five interconnected categories: building and sustaining an everyday resilience architecture; refusing to be defined by what happened; cultivating inner resources; naming the conditions that shaped what was possible; and deciding what resilience means to each woman now. These are not five steps or a formula to follow. They are patterns that emerged across the women’s lives.
At the center of the book is a question of inheritance: What happens to the knowledge accumulated across a lifetime when no one thinks to ask about it?
Where Is Grandma? is not a conventional self-help book. It is an account of what women learn through grief, work, family, displacement, aging, and beginning again—and what might still pass between generations if we make time to listen.Includes a reader's reflection and book club discussion guide.
