When renowned concert pianist Alfredo Cercando loses the use of his left hand at sixty, he retreats to Sicily—not in defeat, but in search of silence. Avola, his childhood home, offers a strange kind of comfort: sun-bleached stone, the scent of wild fennel, and memories that surface like sea glass. There, in solitude, he begins to rebuild—not just his life, but his sense of purpose.
At the heart of his transformation is a faded photograph: nine boys, taken one summer in Siracusa when he was twenty-one and newly married to Eleanor Thomas, his poised New England wife. One by one, Alfredo sets out to discover who they became—and why one of them, a gifted violinist with Arab roots and a troubled past, haunts him most of all. Their eventual meeting becomes something deeper than redemption: a second chance at love, intimacy, and spiritual inheritance.
Surrounded by women who shape his emotional life—Lena, his powerful Boston-born ex-wife; Noa, his gay daughter, raising a child with fierce independence; Hanna, a Singaporean researcher with whom he shares an intellectual kinship; and Krysia, a Polish artist who once reawakened his body and longing—Alfredo begins to piece together a late-life portrait of belonging that defies tradition.
Set between Palermo, the Sicilian countryside, Manhattan’s Upper West Side, Berlin, and London, this is a novel of music, memory, and migration—filled with resonant meals, unexpected friendships, old photographs, and the quiet moments that reveal who we truly are.

JAMES ABRUZZO began his career as a classical pianist. What he learned shaped everything that followed. He has worked for more than four decades at the center of the world's great cultural institutions, advising orchestras, museums, and ballet companies across Europe and the Americas on leadership, governance, and the decisions that determine whether an institution endures. He was also the co-founder of the Institute for Ethical Leadership at Rutgers Business School and held graduate faculty positions at Columbia, Bocconi, and the Free University of Berlin. He knows what it costs artists to dedicate a life to something larger than themselves. Fefè is his first novel.

Their marriage carries Alfredo from the Upper West Side to the Berkshires, from Sicily to London, through concerts, meals, friendships, rivalries, and the intimate politics of family.Fefe is a novel of travel and return: Sicily with its heat and memory, London with its fog and traditions, the Upper West Side with its liberal ideas and rituals, and the Berkshires with its summer festivals. It is also a sensual novel - of meals remembered, shared, and withheld. Food becomes language. Music becomes memory. What once felt secure begins to recede.Fefe is the story of a man who has commanded the room his entire life and must finally ask what it has cost him.
