A blind date. A critique of her left ear. A bowl of tomato soup on a white blouse.
Madison Sharp has spent six years teaching eighth-grade English on the Upper West Side, and three years recovering from a marriage that ended when her husband announced he was no longer happy. Her sister set her up with a dentist who thinks her left ear needs professional attention. Madison walks out of the restaurant with her dignity mostly intact. The only person who sees it is a stranger at the bar, who laughs, pretends he coughed, and tells her that her ears are perfectly fine.
She never gets his name. Then Noah Coward walks into her school.
Noah owns Coward Restoration, a Brooklyn company with a van that says "We're not afraid of the work." He's been hired to restore the school's 1922 auditorium, and he intends to do it right, one seat, one hinge, and one hidden secret at a time. He's patient, he's funny, and he's the first man in years who seems to think Madison is exactly enough.
But a school full of curious eighth graders, a best friend with opinions, a misunderstanding about an architect who touches everyone's arm, and two job offers that could pull them in opposite directions all stand between two people who are very good at their work and very out of practice at love.
The Ear Was Never the Problem is a warm, funny, Manhattan romantic comedy about second chances, stubborn hearts, and the quiet courage it takes to show up and do the work, in love and in life.
If you like romantic comedies with sharp dialogue, real people, and a happy ending you can feel coming, this one is for you.

Jackie L. Smith is a retired U.S. Navy veteran and author from Staffordsville, Kentucky. At 84, he is writing the best work of his life.Smith served twenty years in the Navy, from 1959 to 1979. He went to sea on aircraft carriers, trained in hunter-killer operations with the Sixth Fleet, and served with helicopter squadrons, with ports of call from Boston to Quebec City to the Mediterranean. He earned his bachelor's degree from Chaminade University in Honolulu while on active duty and later earned a master's degree from Central Michigan University. After the Navy, he ran a specialized hospital for the State of Oklahoma for eight years and served as principal of a K-12 school there. He then spent twenty years as a civilian with the U.S. Air Force, retiring in 2009. He also served United Cerebral Palsy of Oklahoma, as president for two years and as a board member for twenty. In all, he gave more than four decades to public service.Smith began writing novels in his eighties and has published more than a dozen since, including thrillers, family stories, romantic comedies, and adventures. His books draw on what he knows best: chains of command, loyalty between brothers in arms, and stubborn integrity. His stories are about ordinary people pulled into extraordinary trouble. He believes every good story needs a dog in it. He collects stamps, repairs computers, and plays a lot of FreeCell.

Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Madison Sharp knew the blind date was going badly when the dentist across the table asked whether she had ever considered getting her ears fixed.Just the left one, Richard Langley explained helpfully. It sticks out a little farther than the other. He knew an excellent plastic surgeon. For thirty-four years, that ear had survived childhood, college, one failed marriage, and six years of teaching eighth-grade English on Manhattan's Upper West Side without a word of complaint. Then a waiter carrying two bowls of tomato soup stepped left, Madison stepped left, and they both corrected right. At the bar behind her date, a dark-haired man reading a paperback began to laugh. He claimed it was a complicated cough.Noah Coward hands her his napkin, offers his professional opinion that her ears are fine, and walks her home, though she never asked him to. Madison is certain that is the end of it. Then on Monday morning she finds a white truck outside her school marked COWARD RESTORATION, and the man who laughed is standing on a ladder in the old library corridor.Madison has spent three years since her divorce making her life so safe that nothing can get in. Noah, who restores century-old buildings and owns a company built on saving things other people give up on, has his own reasons for being careful. He was once engaged to a woman who wanted him to become someone else. When Noah finds a hundred-year-old note hidden behind the trim in Room 214, MARGARET, MEET ME AFTER SCHOOL. HENRY, Madison's eighth graders demand to know whether Margaret showed up. So, quietly, does Madison. Between a leaning bookshelf, a school fundraiser where Noah arrives in work boots, Sunday lunch with his family, and a sister who finds out everything, she begins to fall in love, and to dread what comes next. Then two job offers arrive, one for each of them. A promotion at her school. A year-long restoration of an 1891 house above the Hudson. Each tells the other to take the job. Neither is ready for the first real fight, or for how quickly old wounds can turn a reasonable question into the wrong conversation.Four days of polite text messages teach Madison how much she has to lose. A small walnut box appears on her desk with the old note inside. Then January brings a new job for her, a long commute for him, and a sixty-mile distance that both are determined not to treat as a crisis. Along the way there is Sophie, a student who needs the courage Madison has been avoiding, and a Manhattan apartment that has been hers, and Michael's, and hers again, and may finally be ready to be given up.What follows is a spring of moving boxes, emergency coffee reserves, a terrible lamp, and a question Madison asks about a hundred-year-old couple she has never met: what kept Margaret and Henry together? The Ear Was Never the Problem is a warm, funny, and deeply human love story about second chances, about the difference between being careful and being safe, and about two stubborn people who learn that the best things in life are rarely perfect, rarely convenient, and almost never arrive on schedule. It is for readers who love sharp dialogue, big-hearted families, and a romance that earns its happy ending. It is also a story about tomato soup, a restaurant napkin that keeps changing hands, an unreasonable number of books, and the quiet courage of simply showing up.The problem was believing that love required perfection. Perfect timing. Perfect people. Perfect lives. Madison Sharp finally learned better. Sometimes love arrives during the worst date of your life. Sometimes it carries a stolen napkin. Sometimes it wears work boots to a fundraiser.Sometimes it uses the last of the coffee. And sometimes, if you are very lucky, it shows up, stays, and does the work.
