Sinopsis

Runa inherited a longboat, two old runes, and considerably more expenses than anyone thought worth mentioning.

Svala has spent years carrying freight, passengers, livestock, and whatever else paid the bills along the coast. Under her old captain, the boat had a reputation for finding its way through difficult jobs. Now Svala belongs to Runa, and keeping her means taking whatever work comes along.

There is just one complication: the two worn runes carved into the boat have always worked perfectly.

Runa just doesn’t know what they mean.

With her best friend Freja aboard and Freja’s annoyingly observant younger brother Nils along whenever he can manage it, ordinary jobs have a habit of becoming decidedly less ordinary. Lost nets, missing sailors, troublesome cargo, old wrecks, and things that were probably better left at sea all begin pointing toward the same question:

What happens when everyone knows what a rune means—but nobody has stopped to ask what it means here?
