Can modern Civilization Transform Itself in Order to Survive?

Holding IT Together: Social Control in an Age of Great Transformation offers a thought-provoking probe into the mechanisms of social control and their impact on humanity’s ability to survive dilemmas of its own making… ~ Diane Donovan, Senior Reviewer, Midwest Book Review

Holding IT Together: Social Control in an Age of Great Transformation seeks answers to questions even most climate scientists and environmental activists fail to ask. How can modern civilization transform itself in order to survive? Can the politics of perpetual economic growth on a finite planet be transformed in ways almost nobody has considered? Can we accept the overwhelming evidence that extreme changes are necessary to avoid societal collapse? Can the Earth System’s ecology tolerate our failed energy policy long enough for us to create a new social ecology? Are economic justice and cultural diversity compatible with social control and economic stability?
These questions generate too many ifs and maybes for comfort. The old system of industrial modernism is failing us and its “leaders”—the global power elites—are missing in action. We need a New Great Transformation of society to survive the dangers of ecological instability and extreme conditions disrupting life in the Anthropocene.
In Holding It Together: Social Control in an Age of Great Transformation, Dr. Robert MacNeil Christie explains how we got into this mess and what it will take to come out alive. Despite its many benefits, industrial civilization has become an existential threat. It may even threaten our survival, along with many other species. Neither anti-science denial, indifferent dismissal, nor disinterest or distraction will change the facts and trends verified by decades of rigorous scientific research. The Earth System is rapidly destabilizing. To survive and even thrive, we must transform ourselves, our communities, and our societies into responsible members of the ecosystems of which we are a part. We must ‘hold it together’ to restore our habitats and find a place of our own in the only home we will ever have, the living Earth System, Gaia.

Social psychologist Robert Christie brings to the climate discussion well-articulated points about behavioral and institutional changes necessary to build a viable ecological civilization. The answers are not for sissies and their urgency calls for immediate action. ~ Earl Kessler, author of Letters from Alfonso: Learning to Listen.
