R.L Barth is a Marine Veteran of the Vietnam War, where he was a reconnaissance patrol leader. After the war, he earned a degree from the Northern Kentucky University, following which he was selected as a Wallace Stegner Fellow in Poetry at Stanford University. Barth has written many books of poems about his experiences in Vietnam, and about that war, and about the horrors of war in general. These books include: Forced Marching to the Styx (1983); A Soldier's Time (1987); Deeply Dug In (2003); No Turning Back (2016); and Learning War (2021). In addition, Barth is the editor of The Selected Letters of Yvor Winters; The Selected Poems of Yvor Winters; and The Selected Poems of Janet Lewis.
